Eero in Spain
July, 2009: Eero spent the summer in Spain where he endured high temperatures during rigorous training sessions. This proved to be a very good decision as he later went on to win his first Finnish Championship (boys 12).
Eero played a few tournaments in the heat of the Spanish sun (over 36 degrees Celsius) and had excellent results. He participated in the Bel-Air, Estepon tournament and won the boys under 12 title. He also made it to the final in boys under 14. In other words, the heat did not bother this cool-headed Finnish player.
Benjamin wins his first boys 12 tournament in Finland
June 26-28: Benjamin Hedberg won his first tournament in Finland when he won the Wilson Cup in Tampere.
Riga, Latvia / TE 12 (Tennis Europe) tournament
Riga, Latvia June 22 - 28, 2009
Team members Patrik and Noah participated in the Riga, Latvia TE 12 (Tennis Europe) tournament directly after Båstad. They both had great success once more. Noah went all the way to the final were he lost to Lithuanians Tadas Babelis who also beat Patrik in the semifinal. In the doubles tournament, Patrik and Noah played again great and won the Championship.
The team in Båstad
Benjamin, Noah and Patrik spent a week at an international tournament in Båstad, Sweden, while Eero was competing at a Nike Junior Tour tournament in Vallencia, Spain. The tournament in Båstad, which is one of the two biggest under 12 events in Sweden, was as tough as ever. 160 players, including the top 3 Norwegians, all top 10 Swedes and our team, battled from Saturday to Thursday for the biggest trophies.
Benjamin had an unfortunate draw and faced Norway´s nr 2 in the first round. The 170 cm tall Norwegian with a heavy serve and forehand was stronger this time. Also in doubles, the tournament came to an end in round 1. During the rest of the week Benjamin could concentrate on practice matches against players from the clubs SALK (Stockholm) and WTK (Westervik).
Noah reached the 4th round in singles with three convincing victories, but didn´t find his best form in the match against Carl Söderlund. After a tight first half of set 1 the Swede could fight home the set with 6-2. Noah came back stronger in the 2nd set and the end result 6-2 6-2 doesn´t really do him justice. "Söderlund was a bit stronger mentally today and could win the crucial points, but I got the impression that I can beat him next time", Noah said.
Patrik was solid as a rock in his four first matches, losing only 10 games to his Swedish compatriots. Especially the match in the quarterfinal against Eric Samuelssson, was a fine display of his current form. Patrik had lost against the Swede in January in straight sets, but this time Patrik overpowered him in all parts of the game 6-2 6-1. Six matches in two days was both mentally and physically too taxing for Patrik. The great form he had shown throughout the week was unfortunately completely gone in the semis and Patrik lost in straight sets to Carl Söderlund.
In Doubles Patrik and Noah were as convincing as usually. The two time Finnish champions comfortably reached the quarters without too much effort, but were surprised by their Swedish opponents´ strong start in match nr 4. In the end our boys picked up their game and took the 3rd set champions tie break with 10-6. In the semis Noah and Patrik were again focused from the start and took a straight sets victory in style and with a little luck and some additional confidence our boys could have taken the final against the nr 1 seeds Yemer/Taylor. The Swedish pairing was, however, braver and stronger in the important points and could sail away with the biggest trophy 6-3 6-3.
Overall, the week was perfect. Matches, practice matches and practice in an extremely nice but competitive surrounding. The team learned and gained a lot, and returned home in really positive spirits.
Noah and Patrik will continue after midsummer to a TE12 tournament in Riga, Eero plays tournaments in Spain and Benjamin continues practicing in Turku before the national tour.
